🔬 William Hamilton Ferguson
Geologist William Hamilton Ferguson found the fossil known as the Cape Paterson claw near Eagles Nest in 1903, on the coast between Inverloch and Cape Paterson. Recognised as Australia’s first discovered dinosaur bone, it helped establish the scientific importance of this stretch of coastline. His wider work included field geology and photography in Gippsland. The Inverloch connection is a particular find made during practical scientific work, long before the area’s dinosaur discoveries became a familiar part of local interpretation and guided fossil walks.
